Forced Family Leave

I work for a church as an Administrative Assistant to the Pastor. Today I was forced to take Family Leave due to my father being ill and in the hospital. I did not request nor did I want to take leave.

Can they legally force me to take family leave?

Even if FMLA applies, you didn't seek leave. Is the pastor demanding that you be with and help dad? Just curious.

Naturally, if this is unpaid leave and FMLA applies to employer, I'd take up with the nearest DOL office. If's one thing for employer to have ability to schedule and "force" you to take vacation when it wants (law doesn't require employer to allow worker to choose); it's another to force unpaid leave in this scenario. I'd argue unemployment bebefits claim is in order, if forced time off is longer than state's exclusion period (usually a week).
