verbal abuse?

Recommended Posts

I have worked at a animal hospital in Alabama for 6 years and for the last couple years have encountered what I consider to be verbal abuse from the owner not only to me but to other staff members. I have 27 years in this field and never had a bad report from any employer and have always been praised for the work I did. Several people have quit because of the negativity and accusations that are thrown at us. I have been confronted several times about problems that I was not involved in, or we get yelled at about things we have no control over in front of our clients and we can not defend ourselves or say anything. We have been called stupid, trash, idiots and many other names by the Dr and his wife but are expected to run the clinic when they are not there. I am in my early 50's and have never been talked to or treated like this before. I love my job and the other employees I work with and with the job market so bad thought I could handle it. I have been so stressed about this that I decided I had to at least take up for myself. When confronted by a problem I was not involved in, I tried to explain I wasn't involved at which point I was told to shut my smart mouth and told to leave and so I did. Is there anything that I can do to stop this mental abuse or who do I need to contact about this problem? I do not know if I was fired or just sent home to show everyone that could happen to them if they take up for themselves. Thank you for any help you can give.

A boss being mean in general isn't unlawful. It sounds like the person is quite unhappy and takes it out on others; that doesn't mean this person is doing it for the sole purpose of hurting you. Sounds like you may want to read a few books on how to deal with nasty unhappy folks, or find a new job. This isn't fodder for a lawsuit (which is I presume what you have in mind, given where you posted).
