Running for mayor and sueing the city.

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if there is a law or guideline or regulation that states that a person cant run for mayor of a city if that person is under investigation, and is on legal terms with the city.IE he is sueing the same city he is running for mayor. Any comments or suggestions needed. It seems a little strange to me.

Guidelines or qualifications for running for office vary from city to city and state to state. The first place to look would be the elections code for your city. This may be found in your city's charter , municipal code, or other governing document. Your city clerk should be able to point you to the correct document. The elections code for the city may reference additional legislation, including state guidelines or ethics rules.

Generally speaking, if a candidate meets all of the qualifications for running for office, then he or she may do so, regardless of what legal entanglements he or she may have with the city. However, the specific city may have, as a qualification, that the candidate cannot be involved in a legal dispute with the city.
