Getting started in the FindLaw Answer forums is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
Step 1: Register with FindLaw!
You are welcome to browse the forums as a guest; however, in order to start a discussion or reply to a post, you must first be a registered member of FindLaw.com. Membership is absolutely free and only requires a one-time registration process in which we will need you to confirm your e-mail address. To register now, click on the "Create Account" link at the top right hand of this page. For more details on registering click here!
If you are already a FindLaw.com member, log into FindLaw by simply clicking on the “Sign in" link located on the top right-hand corner of the forum page. Enter your registered e-mail address and password in the provided fields, and then click the "Sign in" button. Once you see the message display "Welcome, (your user name)", you're ready to go!
Step 2: Pick a forum associated with your topic!
If you are asking for help with a specific problem, the first thing to do is start at the FindLaw Answers Index page. Here you can choose a specific forum that best suits your legal issue. For example, if you have a child custody question, your best bet would be to post a question in the Family Law forum where members and moderators who are knowledgeable in that area of law will have an opportunity to respond.
Step 3: Search through current topics or submit your own question in the forums!
Before posting your question in the forums, remember that the “search” function is a very powerful tool. Therefore, you should use the “Search” feature first prior to posting your first question. Once you start to browse through the information here in the FindLaw forums, you may notice that similar questions are asked over and over. To prevent such duplications, we recommend you first search our forums, to see if your question has already been answered. In the top Navigation Bar, you will see a FindLaw search box. Simply type in the term(s), and click the magnifying glass button and see if any of the search results returned anything that may be helpful in answering your question. To narrow down the search results, click on the specific forum in the left-hand navigation to limit your search to that particular forum.
If there aren’t any existing threads that answer your question, not to worry as you can submit a question of your own. Once you've found the forum that best fits your question, simply click on the orange "Post New Question" button located above the list of discussions on the right. You should now be presented with a submission form in which you now can enter a topic title (a one-line summary of your question) and your question (in the “body” field area). For speedier replies to your question, please be sure to be as detailed as possible—include which state you live in, the exact wording of your legal issues, and any other specific facts. Remember to only state facts and not conclusions to ensure that the community can best answer your question. For more details on creating a new discussion click here!
