I work in a small consulting firm.  I was informed last week by my boss that I had to take a lunch hour in the middle of the day.  Today I found out I'm not allowed to take a 15 minute break in the morning and in the afternoon.  I read a book on my "break" period.  Some employees go outside up to six times a day and smoke, but they have not been told to stop.  I don't think this is an especially fair practice, but my question is "Is it legal"?

Few states mandate that employers provide breaks or lunch time at all.  You're free to check with your state labor dept.

Yes, it's legal.
