Question from newmommy001Oct-30

I beleive my son's father may have a mental illness. I beleive he may be paranoid schizophrenic and here's why.

-He is constantly thinking everyone is out to get him.  When we were together even his own mother commented that he thinks that way. When we were together I was not allowed to have friends over if he was gone, cause he thinks they would have stolen something from him without him being there to watch them.

-Every time I write a status somewhere (on Myspace or Yahoo) he automatically assumes it's about him even though his name is never mentioned. One day I wrote "I'm going to the store to put a stick of gum on layaway" It was a JOKE but somehow he thought it meant that I was going to the store to put a gun on layaway so I could shoot him. No clue how he got that from what I wrote. Another time I wrote "Sometimes it's best not to question your friends. Just help them dump the body bag into the river" Again, a JOKE, but he actually went to the police and tried to file a report, claiming it was aimed at him. He was not able to file a report because I did not name him directly.

-He keeps accusing me of doing things I could not have possibly done. For example he accused me of stealing his tax return paperwork when we broke up. When I pointed out he obviously had it because he filed taxes after we broke up, he called me ignorant and said he wasn't going to argue with me. I asked him to explain how I could have possibly stolen it when he filed taxes afterward we broke up and he did not have an answer to that.

-He thinks his ex wife and I have teamed up and are working together to get his 2 children with her plus my 1 son with him taken away from him permanently. We have not teamed up and he has no grounds to think that, as there have never been e-mails exchanged between us. It's just something he randomly made up in his head.

-The latest thing is that he is accusing me of hacking into his e-mail. I don't know the first thing about computers or hacking and he knows this, so how he thinks I could have hacked his computer I do not know.

If I presented these facts to the courts, would it be enough for them to make him get tested to see if he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia?

If not, what can I do about him falsely accusing me of things all the time? It is very upsetting to be repeatedly falsey accused of things I did not do.

The only way to force your son's father to submit to psychiatric evaluation or treatment against his will is to present convincing evidence in a court of competent jurisdiction that he presents an immediate danger to his own safety or that of others.  Behaving like a jerk is not by itself sufficient to have someone examined.

To find out whether this person's behavior constitutes convincing evidence in your unidentified state and in your particular circumstances, contact Adult Protective Services in your county and ask to speak to a caseworker.
