I reside in New York State and live in a large apartment complex. My building is located on the edge of the property away from the mass of other buildings. I do not know what has been going on in the other buildings, but a tenant in my building brought a man with her who was not listed on the lease. This gentleman immediately caused problems in the building and in all honesty scared the other people (myself included) in the building.
When we (the other tenants in the building) contacted the management office with the concerns, they allowed this man to become a listed member on the lease. Problems continued and this man literally went dumpster diving and brought a mattress into the apartment he resides in. Soon after that, his apartment and the apartment directly next to his became infested with bedbugs.
The office never notified anyone, lied on several occasions when we asked what as going on and were generally concerned. I have two small children in my apartment, and although my apartment is always clean, it is still a concern.
Does anyone know if the complex can be held responsible for the spread? If they should have notified us of what was going on? Can they they held accountable for lying?
And most importantly, is this cause to break a lease?
