How old does a child have to be to request whether they want to have visitation with a non custodial parent?

18, when they are legally an adult. Then they can choose where they go and who they hang out with. Before that, they are the subject of the custody/visitation order, not a party to it.

Anyone can request anything at any age. If your intent was to ask about the age at which a child can decide for him/herself whether or not to have visitation with a parent, the answer is the age of majority, which is 18 in most, but not all, states. That said, in a court proceeding, courts will typically give some consideration to what the child wants starting around the age of 12. Specifics obviously depend on the applicable state law.

A child gets to decide with whom he or she will spend his/her time when the child reaches the age of majority (age 18 in most states) or is truly emancipated. While still an unemancipated minor, the child is subject to the control of his/her parent or guardian, and will go where the parent or guardian tells the child to go.

a court order is just that an order not a suggestion, failing to obey it can lead to consequences, including a switch in custody
