Okay I have a question a friend of mines been living in her apartment for about 25 years. The house was just sold and the new landlord agreed to let her stay there. My question is how much can the new landlord increase her rent. He wants her to pay 400.00 more than she already pays.

Does your friend have a lease in place? A landlord needs to take certain steps in order to increase rent. First, an existing lease at your present rent has to end. This means that the landlord cannot increase the rent during your lease. To learn more about this subject matter, you may wish to visit the Real Estate Law Center and read Landlord-Tenant Law as a good resource.

Unless your friend lives in an area covered by a rent control law or has a long term lease in place that limits the amount of any rent increases, the landlord can increase the rent by as much as he wants.
