I reside in New York State and live in a large apartment complex. My building is located on the edge of the property away from the mass of other buildings. I do not know what has been going on in the other buildings, but a tenant in my building brought a man with her who was not listed on the lease. This gentleman immediately caused problems in the building and in all honesty scared the other people (myself included) in the building.

When we (the other tenants in the building) contacted the management office with the concerns, they allowed this man to become a listed member on the lease. Problems continued and this man literally went dumpster diving and brought a mattress into the apartment he resides in. Soon after that, his apartment and the apartment directly next to his became infested with bedbugs.

The office never notified anyone, lied on several occasions when we asked what as going on and were generally concerned. I have two small children in my apartment, and although my apartment is always clean, it is still a concern.

Does anyone know if the complex can be held responsible for the spread? If they should have notified us of what was going on? Can they they held accountable for lying?

And most importantly, is this cause to break a lease?

Brought him where?  And how do you know what this woman's lease says?

About what?

First of all, it doesn't sound as though this concerns you at all.  Second, nothing in your post suggests that the landlord would have any liability to the tenant in the other apartment.

This isn't a complete sentence.

You haven't said what "they" lied about or whether you did anything in reliance on the alleged lie(s).

Let me get this straight.  You want to break your lease because someone in another apartment took a mattress out of a dumpster and, as a result, that apartment and another apartment have bed bugs?  No, that is not justification for you to break your lease without consequence.  If there are other facts that you think might be relevant, you should explain what they are.
