My husband died 5 months ago in Colorado, leaving no estate. He left thousands of dollars in medical bills, I have sent copies of the death cert. and a letter stating he had no estate. Can I be held responsible for his debt, I do not believe I signed anything that said I would be, I have ask for a copy of this from both the hospital and the collection co. if I did, with no response. They have now started sending the bills in my name and are telling me that this unpaid debt is going on credit report. Is this legal, can they change the name on bills, do they not have to give be some kind a proof that I do owe these bills?

Have you double checked to see if you may have signed an admission form when your spouse received the medical services? Family members typically are not obligated to pay the debts of a deceased relative from their own assets.  I suggest you consult with a local Colorado Collections Lawyer who will be able to advise you of your rights and liabilities based on your state laws.
