They have cited an AZ case number but won;t give me further details.
If you have the case number, it might be wise to pay a visit to the court clerk's office in your county to see if anything is on file against you.
an they obtain a judgement on me without me being able to defend myself before a judge? I have heard about default judgements but don't knoe exaactly what they are.
In the abstract, almost anything is possible. That said, principles of due process require that a defendant be given notice and an opportunity to defend. "Notice" usually means personal service of a summons and complaint. However, there are a number of ways in which "notice" could be given that might not result in actual notice to the defendant. Seeing as how this creditor apparently knows where you are, there is no reason why you shouldn't get actual notice, but [stuff] happens sometimes. Again, I suggest a visit to your local county courthouse.
